Silicon core fibres (SCFs) represent an emerging platform that combines the benefits of fibre geometry with the advantages of semiconductor material systems. As these fibres are clad in silica, they are robust, stable, and fully compatible with standard fibre fabrication procedures, thus increasing the device yield and reducing costs 20.
Applications based on the electrical properties are increasing, particularly for sensors 153, 154, 155. Stress effects have been shown to alter the bandgap of silicon 156, and it may be possible to produce direct bandgap GeSn with reduced Sn content 157 when fibre stress effects are harnessed. Further development of III–V materials is anticipated.
