The system will be used for grid stabilization by storing excess energy from renewable sources. The battery, consisting of 144 Fluence cubes will be located on a 6000m² site.

The 30.7M/62.6MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project, called Castor, is located in an energy hub in Vlissingen-Oost, a north sea port town.
Under the Electricity Act 1998, generation is exempt from the payment of transmission costs, but consumption is not. This highlights one of the main barriers to energy storage in the Netherlands, as batteries currently pay more transmission costs than polluting wholesale consumers.
Energy storage can play a key role in contributing to solutions for shortages of capacity on the grid. It is therefore no surprise that we have seen the appetite for large-scale battery energy storage systems growing in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands Advancion Energy Storage Array was commissioned in late 2015 and provides 10 MWh of storage to Dutch transmission system operator TenneT. The project, which represents 50% of all Dutch energy storage capacity, provides frequency regulation by using power stored in its batteries to respond to grid imbalances.
