A multiband energy harvester consists of an energy combiner and single band RF energy harvesters. Energy combiner circuit combines the energy harvested from different frequency bands. A multiband RF energy harvester has the ability to harvest energy emitted from multiple sources at the same time.
In the multiband RF-EH system model, there are many single band RF energy sources and a multiband RF energy harvester. Each of the single band RF energy sources has a different frequency band. The multiband energy harvester makes use of all these sources to harvest energy.
Frequency band of the electromagnetic wave is an important parameter for energy harvesting systems. In this study, simultaneous multiband RF energy harvesting systems are analyzed both theoretically and experimentally for zero-energy devices.
In the single band RF-EH system model, there are a single band RF energy source and a single band RF energy harvester. Here, the energy harvester scavenges energy from this single band source. In the multiband RF-EH system model, there are many single band RF energy sources and a multiband RF energy harvester.
In [ 23 ], a quad band rectenna (consisting of antenna and rectifier) covering GSM, UMTS, and Wi-Fi bands is designed. The conversion efficiency reaches 84% at 0 dBm input power level. In that study, it is shown that the conversion efficiency of the multiband RF harvester is more than doubled when compared to the single band.
When the effects of multiband such as dual, triple, or quad bands on charging time values in Fig. 6 are taken into account, the triple and quad bands show their best performances as 65.81 and 75.43% at – 2 dBm, respectively. In addition to that, the dual band shows its best performance as 49.50% at 0 dBm.
