Here, the PI films of BPDA/4,4′-ODA, BPDA/3,4′-ODA, PMDA/4,4′-ODA, PMDA/3,4′-ODA systems were prepared, and it was found that the PIs with 3,4′-ODA always exhibit a high modulus compared with the PIs with 4,4′-ODA.
The stretched PI films exhibited remarkable high modulus (4.9 GPa) and high strength (258 MPa) in the stretch direction compared with commercial polyimides because of their high degree of molecular orientation induced by uniaxial hot stretch.
The thickness of stretched PI films was reduced at least 75% as compared to unstretched PI films and the thinnest film is only 7 μm. Ultra-thin polyimide (PI) films containing ether and ketone moieties are synthesized and a high degree of molecular orientation is induced by uniaxial hot stretch.
The optical properties of the prepared PI films were analyzed by UV–vis spectrometry over a range of 300–800 nm (Figure 7 a). The transparency of the films increased as the film thickness decreased. In addition, the films with different thicknesses have high transmittance in the visible light region, indicating the high transparency of the films.
In summary, free-standing PI films with high toughness were prepared by a typical two-step polycondensation method. The prepared PI films exhibited great combined mechanical, thickness uniformity, and surface homogeneity, including tensile strength of up to 194.71 MPa, of elongation up to 130.13%, and Tg of 400 °C.
In this study, a free-standing PI film with high toughness was successfully prepared using a diamine monomer with ether linkages. The prepared PI films exhibited significantly superior mechanical properties compared to PI films of the same molecular structure, which can be attributed to the systematic exploration of the film-forming process.
